President Donald Trump got terrible news in a new Politico–Morning Consult poll as his disapproval rating reached an all-time high amid a record government shutdown and concerns about his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Roughly 57 percent of voters said they disapprove of Trump’s job performance, while 40 percent said they approve.
Fifty-nine percent of respondents blame Trump and congressional Republicans for the ongoing partial government shutdown, pollsters found, while only 35 percent blame Democrats for the impasse.
The results come on the 33rd day of the shutdown, which was spurred largely by Trump’s demand for $5.7 billion in funding for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
According to the poll, 49 percent of voters oppose construction for Trump’s long-desired wall, compared to 43 percent who back it. Seven percent of those polled said they would support a compromise if it was the only way to end the closure, however.
Trump’s high disapproval rating also arrives as concerns mount over his relationship with Putin and as special counsel Robert Mueller continues his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
The majority of the poll’s respondents, 57 percent, believes it’s likely Russia “has compromising information” on Trump, while 31 percent of those polled disagree.
The Politico–Morning Consult poll, which was released on Wednesday, was conducted from Jan. 18 to 22. The poll surveyed 1,996 registered voters and has a margin of sampling error of 2 percentage points.
