As Vice President Mike Pence went to Manhattan today for a cybersecurity conference, he was greeted by a flurry of protesters carrying signs such as “Dissent” and “Where are the children?”, who also offered up a chorus of booing for Pence. Also present were at least 100 protesters dressed as handmaids from “The Handmaid’s Tale”, who were there protesting both the treatment of immigrant children and the Trump administration’s attempt to curtail women’s reproductive rights. According to the New York Daily News, which also reported that Pence was greeted by booing from protesters:
“Shame on this administration!” yelled Therese Patricia Okoumou, 44, the immigration activist who was arrested for trying to scale the Statue of Liberty on July 4. The rally was held in front of the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House at 1 Bowling Green. Inside, Pence and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen were attending a cyber security summit… Outside, protesters held signs saying “Dissent” “Resist Mass Detention and Deportation” and “Abolish ICE.” “We can’t have another second of these children being held in cages… it’s war on humanity,” said Mariah Maloney, 50, from Brooklyn.
Much of the protest was directed at the Trump administration’s policies on immigration, including the zero tolerance policy that led to the separation of thousands of children from their parents. Under a court order to reunite the separated families, the Trump administration now claims that it has reunited all “eligible” families, but hundreds of children still remain separated.

At today’s protest a group led by RefuseFascism.org dressed as handmaids from “The Handmaid’s Tale” and called for the end of the “Trump/Pence regime” and for all the remaining children to be reunited, with one sign reading “Give back the children you stole”. According to the New York Post:
A hundred red-cloaked protesters dressed as characters from the dystopian TV series “The Handmaid’s Tale” gathered in lower Manhattan to protest Vice President Mike Pence on Tuesday. Led by the group RefuseFascism.org, which recently made headlines in Philadelphia for a similar rally, the handmaids donned red cloaks and white bonnets and gathered at the Bowling Green 4/5 subway station at noon to march to the Alexander Hamilton Customs House, where Pence was to speak at a Department of Homeland Security conference…“ Mike Pence is a Christian fascist theocrat for whom the Handmaid’s Tale is a model society: the Bible invoked to force women to bear children against their will, to persecute LGBTQ people, to tear immigrant children from parents,” said Sunsara Taylor, an organizer with the group, in a press release announcing the protest. “Only by driving the Trump/Pence regime from power through massive, sustained protest can we stop this nightmare.”

Much like President Trump, protests now follow Vice President Mike Pence wherever he goes.
