On Tuesday morning, Donald Trump found himself staring at impeachment and indictment in the face, and he’s such an obvious goner that no one wants to be his new White House Chief of Staff.
In his newfound position of having zero leverage or political muscle, Trump thought it would be a good idea to climb into the ring today with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer on live national television. It didn’t go well for him.
Pelosi and Schumer gave President Donald Trump an earful in the Oval Office. The incoming House Speaker and the Senate Minority leader met Tuesday with Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, and the pair of Democratic lawmakers blasted the president for threatening a government shutdown over his proposed border wall.
“If I needed the votes for the wall in the House, I would have them in one session — it would be done,” Trump said.
“So go do it,” Pelosi responded.
By the end of the meeting, Schumer had baited the president into bragging: “I am proud to shut down the government for border security.”
Trump held this press conference stunt in an attempt at building momentum for his mythical border wall. He can’t make it happen, because the Democrats are about to control the House, and he can’t get the sixty votes he needs in the Senate for a budget issue like this. So instead Trump tried to bully Pelosi and Schumer in front of the cameras, and threatened to shut down the government.
But Pelosi quickly labeled it the “Trump shutdown,” which caused Trump to recoil. Trump tried claiming that he has the votes for the wall in the House, seemingly claiming that the Republicans are somehow going to be in the majority. This simply opened the door for Pelosi to explain how big of a victory House Democrats had in the midterm elections.
For his part, Chuck Schumer flatly pointed out that Donald Trump is full of crap on the entire border issue: “The Washington Post today gave you a whole lot of Pinocchios.” Trump seemed flustered the entire time, and he was clearly in over his head.
Here’s how the internet responded:
My God, when *Chuck Schumer* is raining down dunks on you, that's just embarrassing.

Two adults dealing with a petulant, unbriefed, unprepared tantrum. White House corroding so much of the gravity and majesty of the Oval Office. https://t.co/7sgnj94D52

I have to say I like what’s happening here. Trump is playing for the cameras, and Pelosi and Schumer are making him look like the pompous, uneducated, empty suit he is.

THE PRESIDENT has just robbed Republicans of the ability to say Democrats are shutting down government.
This is going to be quite the month
