As further proof that, yes, President Trump usually writes his own tweets and, no, he doesn’t bother to give them even a cursory glance to check for typos, Trump just sent a tweet that was about Melania Trump in which he spelled her name wrong. No, not “Trimp” – the Donald would never misspell “Trump”. Trump called the First Lady “Melanie” instead of “Melania”. This lapse seems all the more egregious because the subject was Melania’s return home to the White House after spending five days in the hospital after having a kidney procedure. You’d therefore think that the focus would be on Melania, so he wouldn’t misspell her name, but that was not the case.

Sure, it’s a small detail, but Trump’s tweets go out to millions of people and tweets are short – proofreading a tweet isn’t exactly strenuous. Plus, there’s the marital discord issue. Imagine your spouse’s reaction if you spelled their name wrong – it would likely not be pleasant for you. Someone must have alerted President Trump to his error, so he deleted the tweet and posted a new one with the right spelling, but not before a lot of people noticed and captured the original error.

Below is one of the people who captured Trump’s original tweet, which read, “Great to have our incredible First Lady back home in the White House. Melanie (sic) is feeling and doing really well. Thank you for all of your prayers and best wishes!” The person who posted Trump’s error simply wrote, “Melanie?”

On the marital discord angle, this person tweeted “Even in White House known for typos, spelling his own wife’s name wrong still feels… not ideal.”

Another person expressed alarm, tweeting, “Mein Gott!!! (My God) They gave him the nuclear launch codes and he can’t even spell his wife’s name.”

And this person made a humorous play on words about the typo, saying “Everything he tweets is a vowel movement.”

Details matter, for presidents and for spouses, but Trump doesn’t have the self restraint to proofread something as short as a tweet before sending it out. Donald Trump is not careful, about anything, and wasn’t even able to stay focused on his wife for long enough to get through one tweet without misspelling her name.

There has been a lot of conjecture about Melania Trump’s five day stay in the hospital, with many people suggesting that perhaps it was a bit more serious than we are being told. We don’t know any details one way or the other. One wonders, however, how difficult it may be to rest and recover during the day in the White House with all the activity going on in that relatively small place and with a husband who would probably be blaring Fox News in the next room. Maybe the hospital was just a safer bet for being able to get some rest.
